This Chettinad mansion is for those who would like to turn back several pages into the past, to re-look at the grandeur that existed within the Chettinad community a few decades ago and understand the rich history of India. It’s also a perfect getaway for those who are on food trails or looking out for gastronomic delights in India.

What we love

  • In the heartland of Tamil Nadu, rests a beautiful mansion that was a gift from a father to a daughter. In a place where traditionally, houses and mansions are built not for daughters but only sons, this was remarkable! A testament to the progressive thoughts of the flourishing Chettinad family and a steer away from restrictive societal norms.
  • It’s incredible how beautifully the mansion has been restored to preserve the rich heritage of the past, yet open its doors as a small boutique hotel to discerning travelers with a penchant for the heritage.
  • We love the art deco rooms furnished in dark wood are spacious with high ceilings and hand crafted tiles.
  • The warmth and hospitality that’s extended by the staff will make you feel like they’re a part of your family. The strong bonds that they manage to create with their love and service towards you lingers on long after you’ve checked out.

What to know

  • The word ‘Chettinad’ means a social caste that specializes in preparation of food. It’s therefore no surprise then that the people are considered to be master chefs. The kitchens of this mansion will serve up some of the most delectable and spiciest cuisine you’ve had. Prepare the taste buds and get ready for some scrumptious Chettinad chicken/ vegetable curry! Meals, we assure you, will be a highlight of your vacation. For those who wish to stir up these preparations in their own homes, you could either walk into the kitchen while the meal is being prepared or learn during the cooking demonstration that takes place every afternoon.
  • There are a host of activities that are organized by the mansion to show you a glimpse of the rich legacy of the past - walking tours, bullock cart rides, visit to the local market and a variety of excursions. We highly recommend these during your stay here.

Grandeur of Chettinad Mansions

The Chettiars, a wealthy mercantile community of Tamil Nadu, were once astute traders who lived in a seaside village called Poompukar. The men would sail on country boats to far away lands trading salt, rice and gems.

During one such trip, when they came back, their settlement was destroyed due to a tsunami. That’s when they decided to move as far away from the sea as possible, into the inner land-locked areas of Tamil Nadu across 75 villages which is now known as the Chettinad region.

Their fear of storms and floods forced them to create strong street drainage systems and natukottai of fort like mansions that were raised well above the ground. The profits from trade and business from overseas ensured mansions were grand, showcasing the prosperity levels of the family, with marble from Italy, chandeliers and glass from Belgium, crockery from Indonesia, pillar from England and teak furniture from Burma, while the main mansion was gigantic to house many families together.

Walk down these memory lanes where enthusiastic local guides will take you inside well maintained mansions and palaces while you pass by others that are freckled with negligence and the passage of time.

Athenagudi Tile Making

Make a trip down to the small village of Athangudi where you can watch some of the most beautiful tiles being created. The tiles are hand-crafted by skilled artisans who have been doing this for years on and the skill has been passed down from father to son. The tiles have interesting geometric and paisley patterns that are created using a mould or sometimes done freehand along with the local soil. The colours used reflect a time and age of a bygone era taking you one step closer to the rich cultural past of the Chettinad region.

When you walk down the old Chettinad mansions, you’ll see many of these tiles in a variety of designs on the floors of palaces and other noble homes. If you’re setting up a new home, this is a great place to buy tiles and take them back home!
