Those looking for a tropical beachside vacation with family and friends in a villa that’s exclusive, secluded and private. Great for milestone celebrations or annual relaxed vacations by the sea. This villa is for those who like to romance with nature undisturbed by the crowds.

What we love

  • Set atop a cliff by the seaside, is a beautiful villa with elevated gardens offering sweeping views of the ocean and the coconut lined beach. A couple’s vacation home, built with a whole lot of love, this villa is an interesting fusion of 16th century European architectural styles.
  • A relaxed portico with wicker chairs leads up to the resplendent living room that comes with antique carved furniture, sofas covered in white, standing lamps that illuminate the room while highlighting the teak wooden floors, abstract paintings and elegant chandeliers that hang from the cathedral like ceiling!
  • Five bedrooms, each air-conditioned and with an ensuite bathroom, promises comfort under the nets of the four poster beds. Two offer direct sea views through the antique window frames while others, open up to garden spaces around. All but one of the bedrooms has twin beds, perfect for the kids, while another at a lower level, houses a library within it - you know which room to give the bookworms to!
  • Feast on delicious Sri Lankan preparations such as the ‘fish amble thiyal’, a sour dry curry made of cubed tuna and cooked with local herbs and spices, or a pepper beef curry served with flavoured rice. For something a bit more adventurous, request for a barbecue set up out in the gardens or a candlelit dinner in the company of your family and friends and the pleasant ocean breeze.

What to know

  • Wander down a few steps from the villa and you’ll reach the lonely sandy beachfront, still unexplored and the reason for the owner couple to have chosen this as the villa’s location! The beach is perfect for long morning walks or a cautious swim in the sea in the shallow waters while glancing over the silhouette of sailing ships in the distant horizon.
  • The place offers an ideal vacation spot to recharge your body and soul. Meditate in the yoga pavilion or by the pond, contemplate the mysteries of the universe as you soak up the sun resting in the fashionable infinity pool or simply go for a leisurely stroll around the palm-tree filled property murmuring with the call of birds and the sea.
  • The mezzanine floor houses the television and kids room. Soft toys, board games, DVDs and a television find their place here. While the adults hang out in the grand living area, the children can find a little something up here to keep themselves entertained.
  • The main beach of Mirissa, about 10 to 15 minutes away, is popular for those looking to ride the huge waves that break or those who wish to snorkel their way into the under water world of the Indian ocean. Meanwhile, others who prefer to stay dry, can sip on a well prepared cocktail or sunbathe on one of the many loungers.

Mirissa Dolphin & Whale Watching

Regardless of which part of the Western coastal strip you’re staying at, we’d highly recommend an excursion to Mirissa to go dolphin and whale watching! The excursions start in the early hours of the day where you join a group of people and head out deep into the sea. On the way, while you soak in the vastness of the sea, trained guides will help you spot the different types of playful dolphins that spy hop and leap out of the water to take stock of their surroundings!

Whales, fewer in number and deeper in the sea, are tougher to spot. But in the company of those who make these trips into the sea everyday, you’re bound to spot one! Watch out for the whale’s spout that appears like a fountain of water, a signal to keep the camera’s ready and eyes wide open! Book with Mirissa Water Sports or Raja & the Whales.

Stilt Fishermen

In the past, to battle crowded fishing spots, fishermen affixed sticks in coral reefs right on the water during dawn and dusk to get their catch of the day while balancing themselves delicately on right angled offshoots known as ‘petta’. Many of these fishermen pose for the camera between Welligama and Unawatuna on the coastal strip and earn a better living than by just fishing!

Galle Fort & Lighthouse

The quaint historical town of Galle is a delightful example of Portuguese and Dutch architecture that seamlessly blends in with native traditions. A fortified city that bravely bounced back after the 2004 tsunami, the Galle city is full of wonders and surprises if you’ve got a quick eye and are ready to explore. There’s nothing like spending a day strolling along the decadent ramparts or the ancient cobbled paths with fascinating names such as the ” Moorse Kramerstraat” or the Pedlar Street while peaking into the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church.

Take a selfie with the oldest breadfruit tree in Galle and or have an engaging conversation with many a writers and artists who take a seat at their favourite watering holes in and around the fort area. Call it day with a visit to the Galle lighthouse soaking in the panoramic views.
