A beautiful hillside retreat for those looking to unwind in the cooler climes of the tropical country of Sri Lanka for a few days. Great for those who like to be in the lap of nature, away from commercial and crowded areas in a peaceful hideaway close to Kandy. Good for couples, families with children and small groups.

What we love

  • This charming colonial century old bungalow, set high up in the hills above Kandy, surrounded by lush green forest and vegetation, and offering stunning views of the compelling valley below, was originally a tea estate’s manager’s home. A couple from Britain took this over more than a decade ago and decided to turn this into a beautiful boutique property that feels much like a friend’s country home!
  • 8 unique bedrooms, nestled in the midst of soul-soothing tropical gardens, are spread out across the estate. The vintage main house has 3 bedrooms that retain some of the traditional elements with red oxide floors and period furniture while providing contemporary comforts to guests of the 21st century. Two of these rooms have a little annexe with a single bed - a good room choice for couples traveling with children. The bedrooms here open up to a charming sitting area where guests often mingle with one another towards the evening.
  • The valley house, as the name suggests, boasts splendid views of the valley below from the spacious and indulgent verandah. It has generous bedrooms, contemporary in style and furnished in subtle hues - better suited for those who’d like to stay close to the swimming pool and a few steps from the communal spaces.
  • The two independent garden cottages, each with a bedroom, sitting area and a fabulous balcony, enjoy their own peace and seclusion in a setting that’s truly enchanting with dramatic views down to the valley and mountains beyond.

What to know

  • Enjoy laid back meals at the alfresco dining area, tucked in the midst of tropical greens. For breakfast, choose from an array of fresh fruits, cereal, toast coupled with home-made jams. Cooked preparations are available as well and we do recommend sampling the famous Sri lankan dish - egg hopper served with coconut sambal or curry. Dinners are a delicious three course affair, starting with soup/ salad, followed by a choice of curry or non curry main course and ended just right with some scrumptious dessert - from sorbets to panacotta!
  • Through the day, a choice of well made cocktails, gin and tonics, local alcoholic drinks are offered while after dinner, imported wine is served - all on the house!
  • Afternoons are best spent lazying in the infinity edged pool soaking in the wilderness around or reading a book while on the lounger with a gin and tonic or local beverage by your side. And if you’d like to snap out of the sedentary vacation and pace things up a bit, take one of the mountain bikes available at the estate and go on one of the many suggested trails. You could also pay a game of tennis tennis or croquet!
  • The staff strike the perfect balance of being hospitable yet non-intrusive. Should you need anything at all and if they’re not within eyesight, all you have to do is tinkle and they’ll be right at your service, warm, smiling and ready to help!

Temple of the Tooth

The Temple of the Tooth, an important Buddhist shrine, is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy. This houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha, which is believed to play an important role in local politics - apparently whoever holds the relic, holds the governance of the country!
