A small group of family or friends looking to spend a few idyllic lazy days by the ocean will fall in love with this house.

What we love

  • Drive along the palm fringed coast of Sri Lanka, swerving the car finally towards the peak of a cape like structure, to arrive at an enchanting, exclusive and private oceanside hideaway that almost feels like a millionaire ‘s dream vacation home!
  • Undulating yet perfectly manicured gardens are dotted with tall coconut trees that pierce through the canvas of blue and white, extending from the sea to the sky!
  • The house has been architected and designed by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most revered and loved architect, who has given rise to a refreshing tropical modern style of design that fuses contemporary with natural elements with traces of the Mediterranean, a region that he loved and connected with immensely! This house, with it’s white washed structures, therapeutic and beautifully done up open spaces that allow natural elements to radiate, is the paradigm of experiencing a home that’s been touched by Geoffrey Bawa!
  • The bedrooms, two doubles, with king and queen sized beds and three twin bedrooms, offer stunning views of the sea! Some come with private gardens, while other with alfresco showering areas or bathtubs. The rooms, bathed in white, are coloured only by the local Sri Lankan paintings and flowers inside, and gardens and the sea outside!

What to know

  • Savour mouth relishing Sri Lankan coastal curries, inspired by traditional family recipes, served with jasmine rice and prepared to perfection by the magician of a chef - all this while sitting by the oceanside dining area of the mansion, watching the sun give way to the world of moon and stars while listening to the symphony of the ocean, as you go from one course to the next.
  • If you’re a foodie, make a trip with the chef to the rustic local market town of Dickwella, to pick your choice of fresh vegetables, seafood and tropical spices used for seasoning! Observe him toss and stir up the preparations, while you make a mental note of the dishes for your next party back home!
  • Get ready in your beachwear and skip down to the virgin beach, protected by reefs and sandbars, that leads onto the turquoise and emerald coloured sea. Walk on the beach, stopping every now and then, to watch the waves peak and crash. Surf, swim, snorkel or just be a beach bum! The path leading up to the beach may not an easy one to traverse for those with mobility or walking issues.
  • We absolutely love villas that come with a swimming pool, but if it comes with two, it’s like hitting double jackpot! One of the pools, located close to the driveway, is relatively small, however, the other is an absolute stunner! It’s located strategically right at the edge, offering uninterrupted views of the sea. Body dip in the pool and surface once the well prepared margaritas and mojitos are served in the cabana. Now how’s that for a vacation!

Hummanya Blowhole

Through the crack in the rock, ocean water gushes in and passes through a tiny hole, blowing out in style like a marvellous natural water fountain! This is a blowhole, often appearing with a magical whoosh sound that can be heard few miles away from the site, especially during the monsoons. Great for those who enjoy the little natural wonders.

Mirissa Dolphin & Whale Watching

Regardless of which part of the Western coastal strip you’re staying at, we’d highly recommend an excursion to Mirissa to go dolphin and whale watching! The excursions start in the early hours of the day where you join a group of people and head out deep into the sea. On the way, while you soak in the vastness of the sea, trained guides will help you spot the different types of playful dolphins that spy hop and leap out of the water to take stock of their surroundings!

Whales, fewer in number and deeper in the sea, are tougher to spot. But in the company of those who make these trips into the sea everyday, you’re bound to spot one! Watch out for the whale’s spout that appears like a fountain of water, a signal to keep the camera’s ready and eyes wide open! Book with Mirissa Water Sports or Raja & the Whales.

Stilt Fishermen

In the past, to battle crowded fishing spots, fishermen affixed sticks in coral reefs right on the water during dawn and dusk to get their catch of the day while balancing themselves delicately on right angled offshoots known as ‘petta’. Many of these fishermen pose for the camera between Welligama and Unawatuna on the coastal strip and earn a better living than by just fishing!

Galle Fort & Lighthouse

The quaint historical town of Galle is a delightful example of Portuguese and Dutch architecture that seamlessly blends in with native traditions. A fortified city that bravely bounced back after the 2004 tsunami, the Galle city is full of wonders and surprises if you’ve got a quick eye and are ready to explore. There’s nothing like spending a day strolling along the decadent ramparts or the ancient cobbled paths with fascinating names such as the ” Moorse Kramerstraat” or the Pedlar Street while peaking into the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church.

Take a selfie with the oldest breadfruit tree in Galle and or have an engaging conversation with many a writers and artists who take a seat at their favourite watering holes in and around the fort area. Call it day with a visit to the Galle lighthouse soaking in the panoramic views.
