Nature lovers, seekers of peace and fresh air will love this place! Whether you’re a solo traveler, a couple or a group of close friends/ family, you will leave wanting more. This is the perfect weekend getaway from Mumbai or Pune where you can sit back and relax in peace and quiet surrounded by nature!

What we love

  • The journey through the thick green forest on a horseback with the mist on your face and the hills on the side is like a page torn from the fairy tales
  • This was the second house to the built up on the isolated Western Ghats and hence occupies the sweetest spot in Matheran with sweeping views of the valley, away from the crowded market area.
  • Dinners are usually a beautiful long affair with a four course meal served on the candle lit dining table with other guests.
  • We absolutely loved just chilling at the verandah, reading a book, playing cards, sipping a drink, scaring the monkeys away with a sling shot or just about doing nothing at all. It’s the perfect place for a vacation that will get you completely recharged and well rested.

What to know

  • Monsoons are the best time to visit Matheran, despite the torrential rains and wet mud all around. The place is magical with the mist in the air, the rain on your face and the fresh green of the leaves!
  • Matheran being an eco sensitive and car free region, is only accessible by foot or on the back of a horseback. It may not be an easy terrain for the elderly or the differently abled.
  • Avoid walking to the market after sunset. The path through the forest is pitch dark and may not be very safe
  • Inform the staff well in advance should you wish to have lunch or dinner at the hotel.
  • Cars will need to be parked at Dasturi which is about 4.5 kms away from the hotel. From there on, you can either get on a horse of walk it up.

Trekking in Matheran

For the adventurous trekker(s), Matheran is a pure treat. There are multiple trekking routes to Matheran, the most famous being the one through the Garbert Plateau. The journey starts from Bhivpuri station and the climb is particularly special in the rainy season as there are many rivulets and streams that criss cross the expedition.

Valley Crossing

One activity that should not be missed at Matheran is Valley Crossing. The trip is from Honeymoon Point to Louisa Point, both of which are at a walking distance from The Verandah. The points are located on a U- shaped mountain and one has to go from one side to the other which is nearly 900ft – hanging on a rope with a breathtaking view of the 1000 feet of valley below! It is a once-in-a-life-time experience.
