Jew Town & Jewish Synagogue

Many shops are closed on Sundays

One of the oldest Jewish settlements in the world dating back to 700 B.C. It is also believed that Jewish traders came to the shores of Cochin seeking spices and the town bustled with trade, festivals such as Hanukkah, Yom Kippur and Jewish New Year. Now, you’ll find fewer than 9 surviving members of the community, all over the age of 75. Most migrated to Israel in the 20th century.

Today you’ll see antique shops dot the narrow lanes leading up to the Jewish Synagogue, a flourishing spice market, brightly painted walls and interesting Hebrew inscriptions! Do visit the famous Jewish Synagogue (Closed on Fridays & Saturdays) anytime between 10:00 to 13:00 & 15:00 to 17:00 hours.

Mattanchery or Dutch Palace

Closed on Fridays

Timing: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

The Dutch Palace was built by the Portuguese in 1555 A.D.and was given as a present to the Maharaja of Cochin as compensation for a temple that they had destroyed and also as a bribe to gain favours from the ruling dynasty. Later in 1663 A.D. when the Dutch won Cochin back, the palace was renovated and renamed the The Dutch Palace.

The center of attraction is not the structure of the Palace but the splendid murals on the walls that depict scenes from the Hindu epics, Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi.

Note: Flash photography is not allowed in the Palace.
