Those looking to explore Hampi while staying in comfortable and well appointed cottages will love this place!

What we love

  • In Hampi, it is almost impossible to find good accommodation that goes beyond basic. This gem of a place, situated in a small rural village area, has simple cottages built in local style. Each cottage room also has an ensuite bathroom with modern facilities and a rustic sit-out area.
  • Amidst groves of coconut trees and other greens, the cottages unfold. The landscaping is a refreshing change - we loved the central set up with mini boulders with the occasional lotus in bloom! Little bridges get you from one part to the other, while rural style sheds and stone platforms provide for a good place for evening tea with snacks.
  • There’s a charming covered dining area where you can feast on scrumptious home-cooked style food. Breakfasts are a delight with breads, jams and even butter made in-house, served with fresh juices, eggs made to order and a hot Indian dish. Lunch and dinner are set meals where dishes are a surprise - delicious local flavours!

What to know

  • The temples and other world famous sights of Hampi are very close from here. Walk down 10 minutes, passing by fields of green, boulder hills, lonely ruins, young and playful children and curious villagers to the reach the river crossing point. Take a coracle or a ferry to come by and that’s it, you’re on the other side of the ruins.
  • The coracle and ferry usually operate only from sunrise to sunset. Do make sure you don’t miss the last river ride, else you’ll have to traverse for more than an hour to get back.
  • In the evening, pesky mosquitos can cause havoc. Do keep your room doors closed during the evening time and carry mosquito repellant creams.
  • The warm team of staff are at your service at all times - from arranging transport as required to suggesting places to explore.

Mango Tree Restaurant

Address: River Side Drive, near Temple, Janata Plot, Hampi; Phone: +91 94487 65213; Open: 7:30 am to 9:30 pm

A path through banana plantations leads up to a magical restaurant called Mango Tree, a place that’s built on terraces of land and overlooks the serene Thungabhadra river. The setting is gorgeous! One can sit here for hours on just looking at the river, the huge boulders of Hampi. The ambience in the evening is particularly romantic with lanterns dispelling the darkness.

The food served is usually traditional Indian on a thali. We recommend trying that especially to taste some interesting chutneys and the local preparations. Though, if you’re not in the mood to experiment, there’s a range of international dishes as well that you can order with a glass of fresh-lime soda to go with it.
