Imagine the stories from a place that’s called the villa of clowns, has a jester hat in its logo and is run by witty and elegant brother sister duo. Experience what it may be like to hang out with the locals and be a part of their chitter and chatter.

What we love

  • This villas has three unique spaces in one: A Portuguese mansion built in the 1920s, an older Hindu house with earth walls, and a garden with a large pool and self-contained cottage.
  • The conversations from the eclectic mix of guests and friends that stop by at the bar, one that is made from the back of a Tata truck!
  • Admire relics from the colonial period, and get stuck into the assorted collection of books on the Parsis, British Raj and Calcutta.
  • Savour the scrummy communal meals at the grand dining table by the poolside, and please your senses with the accomplished paintings and photographs adorning the walls.

What to know

  • The clean and virgin beach is just a 10-12 minute walk away. Otherwise, the in-house tuk-tuk can drop you here at a nominal cost.
  • Each room has been decorated differently and named after some place in Tamil Nadu and Bengal; places where the owners’ family has lived in and loved.
  • The villa is situated in the heart of the village. Sounds of the domestic animals and the bells of the local church are the only likely disturbances you’ll encounter!
  • Make sure you read the A-Z information book placed by your bedside - wit and humour at its best! Another book tells how the villa was built. That makes a fascinating read too.

Palacio Do Deao in Quepem

Address: Opposite Holy Cross Church, Quepem, Goa; Phone: +91 9823175639; +91 (0)832 266 4029 Reservations required

Palacio Do Deao is one of the few restaurants in South Goa which is a 213 year old Hindu Portuguese mansion that was built by a Portuguese who was the founder of Quepem town. The palace is surrounded by a layered garden on the banks of the river and has interesting artefacts depicting the lifestyle of a bygone era. The new owner, Ruben & Celia Vasco, have worked hard to conserve and restore the palace.

We highly recommend this place for an authentic 4 or 5 course Indo-Portuguese lunch at a cost of INR 500 served at the verandah that overlooks the beautiful gardens in the palace. If you’re not in the mood for lunch, stop by a cup of tea.

Nostalgia, one of the best restaurants in South Goa for some serious authentic Goan food, was started by Fernando - a chef passionate about food and all things Goan. The menu has a vast variety of seafood specialities and caters exclusively Goan food such as Caldeirada, Caldinho, Panados, Xacutis, Vindalhos Cafreal. The place offers many rare dishes which probably explains why so many locals flock here.
