Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Open: 6 am to 6 pm (all days of the week)

The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary on Chorao island, named after Dr. Salim Moizzudin Ali, India’s pre-eminent ornithologist, is a birder’s heaven!

Take a ferry from Ribander and from there the local boatsmen can take you around the marshy canals on dugout canoes, helping you spot rare birds that now call this place their home. Purple herons, kingfishers, sandpipers, red knots, pied avocet are some of the feathered creatures that you’ll be able to see here. In addition to the birds, a few reptile species also live here - crocodiles, fiddler crabs, flying foxes and jackals.

The best time to visit is in the early hours of the morning and then again during sunset. From October to March, you’ll also be able to spot many migratory birds that fly in here.
