GREAT FOR

A fabulous getaway for couple looking to escape from the urban grind and relax for a few days in a serene setting.

What we love

  • We love the location of the resort! It’s perched on the slopes above a man-made lake that was created for a hydro project further downstream. The location of this resort amidst the pine trees offers stunning views, especially during sunrise and sunset.
  • The resort fuses traditional material from the hills - wood, stone, cane and bamboo - with contemporary building materials, and uses space along with landscaped grounds to create one of the most gorgeous getaways in India!
  • You’ll fall in love with the rooms here. Each of the cottages has a fabulous sit out that overlooks the lake. Even the superior and supreme rooms have been done up very tastefully using local traditional material.
  • You’re spoilt for choice for food here with cuisines such as North Eastern specialities, Indian, Chinese and even Continental.
  • Feel at home with the genuinely warm hospitality from the hills coupled with an unobtrusive service.

What to know

  • You can also indulge in a relaxing traditional massage during your stay here!
  • Do check out the ethnic emporium from where you can pick up some great gifts for family and friends.
  • You’re far from the crowd in a serene setting by the lake but should you wish to do a bit of shopping or check out some local restaurants, Shillong city is just about an hour away. The resort can arrange for transfers.
  • During your stay at this beautiful resort, you could also go on a country boat ride or even kayak in the lake! Ask the resort manager to set this up for you when you get there.
  • The resort is set in a gorgeous forested area and we’d recommend carrying a good pair of walking shoes.

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Cherrapunji which means the land of the oranges is one of the wettest places on Earth! Make a trip here through the winding roads of the East Khasi hills passing through oak and pine forests and a variety of rare orchids! You’ll also see breathtaking waterfalls cascading beautifully over deep gorges and some of the most enchanting limestone caves.

Here’s a route that you could take:

Start with Shillong Peak which is the highest point in Meghalaya. Here, you can also dress up in a traditional Khasi attire and get photographs taken, cheesy but fun!

Move on to Mylliem, that’s an area full of rare orchids! Proceed to the gorgeous region of Cherrapunji and then to Mawsmai limestone caves that run more than 3 kms deep!

You must also visit Mawlynnong, a place that’s earned the much deserved title of the cleanest village in Asia! Bamboo waste baskets hang outside the Khasi huts that dot the the little narrow lanes while blooming flowers and the warmth of the locals welcome you in!

If time permits, head over to Nohkalikal Falls, second highest in India or to Nohsngithiang Falls, also known as the Seven Sisters Falls that offers a great view of Bangladesh on a clear day.

Living Root Bridges, Meghalaya

In the past, the Khasis noticed the qualities of rubber trees that could perch themselves beside rivers and adapt to the highly erosive soil of the region. These rubber trees send out a multitude of secondary roots from the trunks. The Khasis noticed this and adapted the trees to serve their need for bridges to cross over rivers and streams, thus creating the living root bridges!

Teer - A Gamble!

Try your luck at ‘Teer’ or ‘Thoh Kyntip’. This is a unique gambling game where you can go to one of the many counters in the city and buy a ticket (hand-written chits) with a number of your choice from 1 to 100. Professional Khasi archers gather at the Polo grounds and shoot at a target made of haystack. If your number comes, the returns are pretty high! Must try this while in Shillong!

Local Market - Iewduh or Bara Bazar

Bara bazar or Iewduh is a massive open local market in Shillong where a large number of Khasi tribes come down from their villages selling a bewildering variety of stuff - from edible frogs to bamboo products!

This market isn’t for the faint hearted but is certainly a food’s paradise for non-vegetarians. For those who relish local preparations, try the dishes at the jadoh stalls (jadoh literally means rice meat’) in the market. Ask for jadoh, chicken curry, pork with neiiong or black sesame, dohkhlieh (a type of pork salad) served with a variety of chutneys!

A note of warning: the market, though a spectacle for the eyes, can get pretty messy especially when it rains. We’d also recommend visiting the market with a local guide. The hotel will be able to arrange for one.
