Experience Goa just the way it was while staying in a beautiful restored Portuguese susegad located close to the sea and a short distance away from a smorgasbord of commercial offerings. Great for a couple or a group of 8 looking for a peaceful vacation while being pampered in a luxurious setting.

What we love

  • Just off the coastline near Panjim, this derelict lake-side mansion once belonged to a local Goan Portuguese family for over a century until a few years ago when it was secretly bought by a gentlemen and gifted to his daughter. Dreamy-eyed she set out to restore the villa with a winning team that echoed her vision of retaining the feel of a Portuguese house while infusing contemporary luxuries.
  • This Portuguese mansion beckons one from a distance and makes you fall in love with it the minute you begin to get close. A laterite pathway flanked by verdant gardens ushers one in through arched columns into the world of a laid-back susegad Goan life.
  • Hints of Moroccan design permeate into the tastefully done up hip living and lounge areas. Colourful textiles dress the furniture while the setting sun reflects off the mirrored-ceiling creating beautiful patterns on the walls! The poolside lounge area also doubles up as a massage space for times when you’d like to get indulge and get pampered.
  • The four bedrooms, set around the courtyard swimming pool, are sublime! The master suite comes with a comfortable living lounge, a grand bedroom that overlooks the gardens through the glass doors, and a handcrafted bathtub for two, making it perfect for a couple looking to indulge or a family with children. The beautifully designed poolside bedrooms with four poster beds placed on the handprinted tiled floors, and luxurious bathrooms with double sinks are perfect for romantic couples. The river view room is one that’s really special - this floral wallpapered bedroom with a cosy four poster bed, an intimate bathroom with a bathtub, and a waterfront garden, is bound to strike a chord with those in search for a quiet time.

What to know

  • To create an experience that’s hassle-free, a stay here includes a local mobile phone and a chauffeur driven car at your service, easily helping you sample the different shades of Goa at leisure. Slip into your beach wear and set off to swim in the sea, just 10 minutes from the villa. 15 minutes north lies the cultural hub - the Fontainhas, where you can stoke your passion for all things historical or dine at one of the many restaurants - from those that do traditional Goan cuisine to those that specialise in exotic world flavours.
  • The setting within the villa is so enchanting that it’ll be tough to leave this space. And for when that happens, a creative menu focussed on Goan and French food will be on offer. Choose a dish of your choice and get ready for deliciousness to come your way served where you please - the formal dining area, the alfresco verandah by the lakeside or by the pool. We highly recommend the signature freshly caught seafood pasta.
  • The day slips beautifully from morning to afternoon by the inner courtyard pool. A soak in the pool followed by long hours of roosting on the pool lounger with a good book and a beverage of your choice. Ah, the little pleasures of a vacation in the tropics!

Palacio Do Deao in Quepem

Address: Opposite Holy Cross Church, Quepem, Goa; Phone: +91 9823175639; +91 (0)832 266 4029 Reservations required

Palacio Do Deao is one of the few restaurants in South Goa which is a 213 year old Hindu Portuguese mansion that was built by a Portuguese who was the founder of Quepem town. The palace is surrounded by a layered garden on the banks of the river and has interesting artefacts depicting the lifestyle of a bygone era. The new owner, Ruben & Celia Vasco, have worked hard to conserve and restore the palace.

We highly recommend this place for an authentic 4 or 5 course Indo-Portuguese lunch at a cost of INR 500 served at the verandah that overlooks the beautiful gardens in the palace. If you’re not in the mood for lunch, stop by a cup of tea.
